INTRODUCTION/PRESENTATION OF THE ORGANISATION

What is the Spanish Medical Organisation (Organización Médical Colegial or OMC) and what is its role?

The Organización Médica Colegial de España (OMC) is a Spanish organisation which comprises the General Council of Official Medical Colleges (Consejo General de Colegios Oficiales de Médicos or CGCOM), the Provincial Medical Colleges (52) and their respective Autonomous Medical Councils (17).  Its role is to represent all the registered doctors in Spain, ensuring proper standards and promoting an ethical medical practice.

We are a public law corporation protected by the law and recognised by the State, with competence in the following areas:

-    Register of professionals
-    Representation of the profession in the national and international scenario
-    Organisation and regulation of the professional practice
-    Function of control of training and academic contents of university titles of doctors, which are the basis for the official recognition of the professional practice.
-    Issue, receive all kinds of certifications and reports, specifically those concerning the professional suitability or certificates on professional status for any physician who leaves our frontiers or when  communicated to us by other countries.
-    Disciplinary proceedings / notification of sanctions or disqualification proceedings for the professional practice. (issuer-receiver).
-    Deontological control of the professional and its values in good medical practice.
-    Spanish Accreditation System of Continuing Medical Training (SEAFORMEC): In 2002 the General Council of Official Medical Colleges (CGCOM) was granted the management of the Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport and the Ministry of Health and Consumption, recognising us as Competent Authority in functions relating to CME Accreditation in the medical profession, issuance of "certificates" and "reports" for the purpose of evaluating and supervising those activities.
-    We are a digital certification organisation with professional registration authority recognised by the Ministry of Industry, providing a tool for the digital certification of the medical profession.
-    Regulation of the migratory flows (inputs/outputs) of physicians both inside and outside the EC.

In the international scope it holds a Vice Presidency in two medical organisations namely: the European Union of General Practitioners, UEMO; and the European Council of Medical Orders, CEOM.

It is also member of other European medical organisations such as the European Association of Senior Hospital Physicians, AEMH; the Permanent Working Group of European Junior Doctors, PWG; and the Medical Orders and Chambers of the Mediterranean Countries, GIPEF.

It belongs to the network of Health Professionals Crossing Borders, HPCB, and is represented on the European Council of Liberal Professions, CEPLIS, through Unión Profesional, UP.
